WELLINGTON went down to the season's double against Weston super Mare when they lost by four wickets away in the Bristol/Somerset Division of the West of England Cricket League.

It was yet another game in which Wellington simply did not make enough runs. They set the home side a target of 142 - which was short by about 40 runs.

Wellington, who chose to bat first, made a disastrous start, losing openers Nathan Roberts and George Ruell with only two runs scored, having faced a total of only ten balls.

Jacob Hurry was joined by skipper Arron Campbell but the former departed with 38 runs scored for 12.

Much now rested on the shoulders of Campbell as he and Sachindu Colombage tried to repair the damage. But Campbell (16) fell at 43 and the Sri Lankan (19) with the score on 68.

Wicketkeeper Callum Hendy and vice-captain Luke Desave were just beginning to make an impact when Desave was out for 13 with the score now 86 - and with six wickets down.

Hendy and Ben Evett brought up the 100 before the latter was out on 118, with the score quickly becoming 122-8, 122-9 and 141 all out with Hendy top scoring with 31, which included five fours.

Tahmid Ahmed finished with figures of 4-50 and Shabel Ahmed 3-31.

Weston, who won by seven wickets when the sides played each other at the Playing Field in late May, quickly lost opener Shabel Ahmed, caught by Hendy off the bowling of Campbell, who opened the bowling with Desave.

Campbell struck again in the fifth over, having Lachie Bailey caught by Evett for 14 with the score on 26.

However, Jack Press and Tahmid Ahmed steadied the ship with a third-wicket stand of 44 before Press (26) became Campbell's third wicket - with Evett again being the catcher.

At 70 for three, Weston still looked the more likely winners although a couple of wickets for Wellington would make the game much more interesting.

And Colombage obliged by taking the wickets of Tahmid Ahmed (22) and Davis Trego (5), leaving the game much more evenly poised at 90-5.

Charlie Cunningham (18) and Chris Davidson (24 not out) brought up the 100 for the seasiders and shared in a match-winning sixth-wicket stand of 49 before Weston reached their target for the loss of six wickets.

Campbell ended with figures of 3-32 in ten tidy overs, while Colobage took 2-62 in 9.2 overs. Roberts took 1-4.

Victory enabled Weston to go sixth in the table, while Wellington dropped back to joint eighth spot with Ilminster on 126 points, with only Taunton Deane below them.

Clearly, Wellington still have much to do to avoid being relegated in their first season in the Bristol/Somerset Division.
