WELLINGTON 2nd XI stretched their lead at the top of the third division in the Somerset Cricket League to 33 points after gaining a thrilling three-run home win over Street.

After choosing to bat first, Wellington scored 231 for four, after being given a 139-run start by openers Neil Hendy (51) and Paul Short (72). Lower down the order Adrian Hearn hit 39 not out from 25 balls while Toby Stirzaber knocked 16. Matt Davey and Dillon Difford both snapped up two wickets.

Street made a spirited bid to get the runs, finishing an agonising four runs short of victory after opener James Maxfield scored 86, Tom Davey 72 and Henry Callaghan 20.

Tyler Fyfe, Charlie Burrough, Rob Moysey and Stirzaker all finished with one wicket each.

Wellington’s main rivals for the title Middlezoy lost ground after they lost to Chard at home by eight runs in another exciting game. Chard, batting first, scored 240 all out with D Cleal scoring 64.

Middlezoy came up short - but only just - despite a fine 64 not out from T Flitton.

Wellington are set to play away to Middlezoy in a top of the table clash on Saturday, August 3
