WELLINGTON lost their first away match of the season in the Bristol/Somerset Division of the West of England Premier Cricket League when they went down by 64 runs at Clevedon.
On a hot, sunny day, Clevedon scored 280-6 - a score which proved too many, with Wellington falling behind the run-rate and losing wickets in the process.
Clevedon, who won the toss and chose to bat first, put on 33 for the first wicket before Louie Woodland was out for 11. Nick Carpenter was joined by Bayley Wiggins and they began to find the boundaries, taking the score past 100.
The partnership was worth 88 when Carpenter was out for 57, bowled by Sachindu Colombage with the score on 121.
Wiggins and Tyler Leaman continued to build the innings on a good batting surface as the score moved onto 181 when Leaman (47) was out lbw to Colombage.
Iraq Thomas (1) quickly fell to a catch by Jacob Hurry off Luke Desave's bowling, but Wiggins continued to make steady runs as the home side's score went past 200.
John Bachelor upped the tempo before Wiggins was finally out for 81, a knock which included two sixes and six fours, with the score on 239. Bachelor (30) went at 259 with the innings closing on 280-6.
Colombage finished with figures of 2-44 and Tom Stirzaker 2-49.
With Wellington facing their biggest run chase of the season, the visitors made the worst possible start with opener George Ruell losing his wicket with only five runs on the scoreboard.
Fellow opener Nathan Roberts and Jacob Hurry shared a 28-run second wicket stand before Hurry (19) was lbw to Mark Bibbing, having played himself in.
Wellington now needed a big partnership if they were going to make a game of it and Roberts was joined by Alex Sparks, two players with match-winning qualities.
They began to chip away at the target but the run rate was becoming increasingly more difficult - at seven an over.
They passed the 100-run partnership and Wellington were 169-2 after 35 overs - still needing more than a run a ball.
Sparks was out for 52 at this stage and Roberts, now on 87 not out, was joined by skipper Arron Campbell with 112 runs still required with seven wickets in hand.
Roberts added only two more runs before he was out - his 89 including 11 fours.
Campbell and Colombage were now tasked with knocking off the runs - but 100 were still needed from the last ten overs.
Not surprisingly, wickets began to turmble with Wellington losing the last four for the addition of only 14 runs.
Scores: Clevedon 280-6 (50 overs), Wellington 216 (47.4).
