WELLINGTON 3rd suffered their first defeat of the season in Division Six West of the Somerset Cricket League when they went down by six wickets away to Middlezoy.

The result meant Middlezoy, who had won only two of the previous games, moved above Wellington in the table.

Put into bat, Wellington never seriously recovered from losing opener Simon Burrough with only four runs scored. Alex Derbidge scored 34, following his 65 of the previous weekend, while Marc Holloway, batting at No4, hit 21 not out before running out of the partners.

Wellington were bowled out for 104 with Alex Pomeroy taking 3-16 and Ashley Clapp 2-13.

Middlezoy were themselves in trouble, having lost four wickets in scoring only 27 runs, but Greg Turner (58 not out) and Ashley Clapp (26 not out) came to rescue for the home side with an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 78. Andy Groves took 3-51 in his eight overs and Derbidge 1-33.

Elsewhere Winscombe consolidated their position at the top of the table with a five-wicket success against Ilton.

Wellington play Ilton hoping for a better result at Sampford Arundel on Saturday, June 22, while Middlezoy are away to Taunton Deane.
