WELLINGTON lost a dramatic home game by only two wickets against Clevedon in the Bristol/Somerset Division of the West of England Premier Cricket League.

However, they collected six points which could prove crucial in the fight to avoid relegation at the end of the season.

Wellington, put into bat, lost opener George Ruell (11) and Jacob Hurry (0) with the score on 17. Nathan Roberts (4), who had opened with Ruell, was out with only four more runs added and skipper Arron Campbell also departed on the same score without scoring.

Alex Sparks, back in the side, was joined by Sachindu Colombage and the pair set about trying to avoid a complete collapse - and to score much needed runs. They put on 45 painstaking runs before Sparks (29) was caught by Nick Carpenter off the bowling of Jack Davey.

Colombage and wicketkeeper Callum Hendy saw up the 100 but two runs later the Sri Lankan (31) was unluckily out 'hit wicket' and Hendy departed for 14 with the score now 104-7.

Vice-captain Luke Desave, however, showed that batting was not impossible and took the score to 150 almost single-handedly with Ben Evett at the other end.

Desave's innings ended when he was caught, having made 39 off 29 balls with the score on 152. Both Evett and Toby Stirzaker were out without adding any runs as Wellington were all out with nearly ten overs still remaining.

Carpenter finished with figures of 4-14 off 6.3 overs, Davey 3-23 off six and Banks 2-23 off ten.

Clevedon did not make the best of starts either, losing opener Louie Woodlands (7) with only 14 scored, Colombage taking a catch off the bowling of Campbell.

Bayley Wiggins quickly upped the tempo with four fours but Clevedon lost two quick wickets at 30 and 31 as Nick Carpenter (6) and James Caddick (6) were out.

Campbell claimed his third victim when he bowled Tyler Leaman as the visitors slumped to 47-4.

Wiggins remained the big danger and he and Jacob Ward shared in a fifth-wicket stand fo 47 before the former was out for 44.

Jack Davey failed to trouble the scorers as Clevedon's sixth wicket went down at 102 with the game now evenly poised.

Much now rested on the shoulders of Ward and he reached his 50 off 54 balls as Clevedon moved towards their target with plenty of overs in hand.

Josh Jenkins was out with the score on 144 and Ward followed a run later, having made 61.

Eight runs were still required by Clevedon who eventually squeezed over the line without further loss.

Campbell was Wellington's star bowler with 5-45 in his ten-over stint and Nathan Yarde took 2-15.
