THREE Men's League bowling teams from Wellington faced a powerful squad from South Petherton on Saturday in Somerset's South-West 1 Men's Bowls League.

Mike Copping, Roger Murphy, Nick Channon and skip Mike Groves found themselves in a close battle. Every end was tight but Mike Groves' foursome led by one or two shots for much of the time.

With only two ends to play the teams were level on 16 shots each - but then came the decider. South Petherton's squad picked up five shots to make it 21 – 16 before eventually winning 21-18..

Darren Sparks, Henry Richbell, Graham Brown and skip Paul Kelly had a much easier time of it.

South Petherton managed to take the lead once during the game. In the sixth they were 7 – 6 up but after that the Wellingtonians got down to some serious bowling and finished the match off with a 29 – 12 victory.

Pete Nicholls, Eddie Dilley, Jay Merrell and skip Phil Ellis' Wellington side set off at a terrific pace. After a big 5 in the fifth end they were 9 – 1 up.

Pethertonians did all they could to catch up but to no avail. Final score 21 – 14 to Wellington.

Result: Wellington 68, South Petherton 47.
