THREE teams from Wellington Pétanque Club entered the Devon League Winter Pairs competition recently.
After battling their way through five rounds in some terrible weather Jo Beer and Dave Cheeseman reached the final, playing as Wellington 1.
As the first placed team in League A they had won four of the five rounds, had a 13 point lead over the second placed team, and scored a total of 179 points.
Playing against seven other teams they eventually reached the play-off for third place.
In the lead at 12-7 their opponents then scored 6 to reach 13, so it wasn’t to be.
Petanque and boules are two different names for the same game.
In French, the word boule means ball and in France people often refer to the game simply as boules (pronounced BOOL). Outside of France the game is usually referred to as “petanque” (pronounced pay-TONK).
