IT WAS particularly good news for Wellington Bowling Club Lions when two teams played away to Heavitree, one of the very top clubs in the Over 60s League - and they came away with a good win.
Not that it was a total victory; at one stage it was close. Julian Street, Graham Brown and skip Paul Kelly found themselves in a very tight battle. After twelve ends the teams were level on 13 shots apiece. After fourteen they were still level at 14 all.
With one end to play Wellington Lions were one shot up 16 – 15 and looking good. But in the last, the Exeter side picked up that vital shot to make it a draw 16 – 16.
Mike Copping, Phil Nichols and skip Mike Groves have played well all season and were not about to start losing now. After just three ends they were flying high, holding 10 shots to 0. The Lions were not content with only a ten shot lead and went on to take a very comprehensive win by 26 shots to Heavitree's 8.
So Wellington's Lions were purring all the way home following a splendid overall victory, 42 shots to 24.
