MUCH has been spoken and written about the cost of living crisis which affects just about every Wellington family these days.

Not so widely recognised is how the town’s traders have also suffered in the crisis because their overheads have been going up while at the same time people have less money to spend with them.

The Wellington Weekly has written recently about a number of businesses which have closed their doors or are soon to close.

So, the town council’s idea of putting market stalls outside the front doors of High Street shops to take away even more custom from them was never going to go down well.

And so it proved, with a torrent of complaints from traders, and the travelling public, who found themselves stuck in traffic jams or missing their bus because the route had to change and they could not run to time.

While the town council cannot be blamed for the wanton market lay-out, the blame for allowing it to happen does firmly lie with them.

But, fortuitously, the market organisers have suddenly discovered they cannot continue, and therefore the council will be more closely involved in future.

Hopefully, councillors will have learned lessons.
