LOCAL MP Gideon Amos is not the only one who thinks it's ridiculous that Wellington has not got a post office.
Mr Amos says: "For a town of 15,000-plus people to be without its own post office is absolutely ridiculous and this is one of my top priorities as 2025 gets under way."
I don't think anyone realised that the town would still be without a post office more than fours years after it disappeared from the High Street following the closure of the One Stop convenience store.
If you want to go to a post office, the nearest is at Rockwell Green which can be a bit of a challenge if you don't have a car or have underlying health problems.
I know of businessmen in the past who have looked at opening a post office in town but have found it unprofitable - with mountains of paperwork involved.
Gideon Amos has launched a petition calling for the return of a Post Office for Wellington. And good luck to him.
But is seems that until Post Offices can make a decent profit we could be in for a long wait.

MORE and more people seem to be taking out their mobile phones for a walk at night these days.
You can spot them - with their dog - some way off because the light shines from their phones on to their clothing at waist high.
I've no idea what their dogs must think of their masters. They must look up and see them in deep concentration with no thought for their pets.
I've always used the evening's dog walk as a time to relax from a day's stress at work. And I certainly don't take my mobile phone with me.
And it may be that this is the reason there is so much dog mess on our footpaths and pavements. Dog walkers may not be aware their pets have messed because their mind is elsewhere.

YOU may have noticed that the Wellington Weekly News office in High Street has had a makeover - both inside and out.
So it's nice to know my employers - Tindle News Group - are keen to invest in its product. Many local newspapers in the country are struggling or have gone to the wall.
But the Wellington Weekly and its sister paper in West Somerset, the Free Press, are bucking the trend, maintaining advertising revenue and holding on to acceptable circulation levels.
Both papers are digital first meaning you can read the latest news first on its websites.

SHOPLIFTING has always been a major problem, particularly for businesses where the margin of profit is small, so it is good to see that Wellington police have stepped up their bid to catch offenders.
Police Sgt Jon O'Connor has told members of Wellington Town Council that there has been a more 'visible police presence in the area.'
He said that some of his officers had even been out and about wearing 'jeans and hoodies' in a bid to 'blend in' with the surroundings.
I once helped to catch shoplifters in Lancer Court, Wellington - admittedly some time ago - who were concealing stolen items under their clothing. I told the police who eventually caught the culprits who had a car boot full of stolen items.
Shopkeepers in and around the Court collected some money and presented a cheque to me. All I had done was to tell police what I had seen - so the cheque was much appreciated! I didn't expect it but it does show how serious the problem is, not just locally but nationally.
