The new unitary council is set to assume responsibility for bin collections when it convenes next month.

The Somerset Unitary Council will take control of waste services from the Somerset Waste Partnership. This will see the new council take charge of 35,000 weekly bin collections and 16 recycling centres.

Wellington residents have been assured that services will not be interrupted.

In a statement the Somerset Waste Partnership said: "It will be business as usual for waste services when the new Somerset Council comes into effect next month.

"The contractors making collections and running recycling sites will continue to do so. Behind the scenes, the SWP team will become part of the new council.

"Waste services will continue to have their own @somersetwaste accounts on Facebook and Twitter, and the dedicated SORTED monthly e-newsletter will carry on providing the latest service news and useful advice.

"There will, however, be changes to the waste website presence and customer contact."

To make a call about waste services from April, ring 0300 123 2244, as old District Council numbers will no longer work.
