Wellington Town Councillors took up their litter grabbers and donned high vis jackets to collect litter from across the Green Corridor on Monday.

Councillors John Thorne, Catherine Govier, Keith Wheatley and mayor Mark Lithgow filled up five bags of rubbish over the course of a two hour litter pick. The debris included crisp packets, beer bottles, cans of lager, and a half buried Tribute pint glass.

The clean up was held as part of the Great British Spring Clean initiative, being put on by the charity Keep Britain Tidy.

Wellington Town Cllr John Thorne said: "Having only just taken charge of most of The Basins land it was really good to get out and help clean it up. We had planned this for a little while and there wasn't as much litter as we would have expected because in the meantime the Wellington Litterbugs group had been out here, and that helped a lot."

The Great British Spring Clean is running from March 17 to April 2. The event sees individuals and groups from across the country pledging to pick up litter for the good of the environment.

As of Monday over 300,000 bags of rubbish had been filled by volunteers. If you want to take part in the Great British Spring Clean, you can pledge your time online.
