TOWN councillors are stepping into a row over street parking which could see yellow lines being laid on roads on one of Wellington’s largest housing estates.
Residents have complained on social media about ‘dangerous’ and ‘inconsiderate’ parking on the Cades estate, particularly highlighting issues on a bend in Torres Vedras Drive, just past its junction with Bramley Close.
They were also upset at access to and exit from the estate off the B3187 roundabout being made difficult by people leaving parked cars and then catching the Falcon Flyer bus service to Plymouth or Bristol Airport, which uses a stop opposite the Lidl supermarket every hour.
Now, the town council is consulting with residents and wants to hear their views and suggestions before meeting on site with Somerset Council officials early in November.
Town clerk Dave Farrow said: “While the road was managed by the developers there was very little the council could do to address these concerns.
“The road has recently been adopted by Somerset Council which gives us the opportunity to look into the issues residents are experiencing and, working with Somerset Council, look at potential solutions.”
An online survey has been published here https://forms.office.com/e/S1qU8RKx8g for residents to complete by 5 pm on Friday (November 1).
Mr Farrow said residents who did not believe there were any specific issues and/or were against any parking restrictions being put in place, should also let the council know.
He said: “This is the first step in what could be a long process but we need to start somewhere.
“The site meeting is where we will present residents’ concerns and thoughts on potential solutions.
“If Somerset Council agree action needs to be taken, there will begin a consultation process prior to any works taking place.
“This is an opportunity for any concerns or otherwise to be presented to Wellington Town Council to help improve access into and out of the estate.
“The more views and evidence we receive by the end of the month, the greater the chance of moving to the next stage of the process.”
