WELLINGTON Sports Centre is set to unveil its brand-new gym on Saturday (July 6) following a £500,000 refurbishment.

The centre – which is run by leisure operator Everyone Active in partnership with Somerset Council – is hosting an official celebration on the day of reopening, welcoming existing members and the public to have a first look at the new and improved gym facilities.

The upgrades include all-new cardio equipment, such as arc trainers and a ski erg, as well as new resistance equipment and free weights.

As well as having the chance to try out the new facilities, visitors will be able to get involved with the variety of fitness-focused activities on offer, such as personal training taster sessions, gym challenges and Les Milles classes – all free of charge.

Visitors will also be able to hear from Everyone Active’s Sporting Champions from Somerset in an exclusive Q&A session at 12pm. This will feature Wellington’s steeplechase star and world-record-holder Kirstie Booth and triathlete Lucy Etherton.

Gary Beasley, general manager of Wellington Sports Centre, said: “We can’t wait to unveil our gym and show the local community the new and improved facilities on their doorstep.

“Our upcoming open day will be a fantastic opportunity to try out the new equipment and hear from inspiring local athletes. We look forward to seeing our existing members as well as some new faces join us for the official reopening.”

A Somerset Council spokesperson added: “We are thrilled about the upcoming unveiling of the new gym. Whether you’re a familiar member or a first-time visitor, we hope you enjoy the upgraded facilities.

“This Saturday’s grand opening marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to decarbonise and enhance the centre, ensuring it becomes a sustainable, future-ready, outstanding venue for the Wellington community.”

A new functional training gym is also due to be installed at the centre, with plans to open in September.

The gym refurbishment is part of a wider £3.6million decarbonisation project to transform Wellington Sports Centre into a facility fit for the future.
