A MAIN road through Wellington town centre remained closed on Wednesday morning (January 10) while emergency water mains work and resurfacing was being carried out.

Water was seen flooding along part of South Street during Tuesday, prompting Wessex Water to despatch engineers to investigate.

They discovered a mains pipe leaking under the road near the Sunseed health food shop and had to excavate the highway to reach it.

South Street was closed overnight and a traffic diversion put in place via Bulford.

Engineers worked through the night to fix the burst pipe and allow highways contractors to resurface the road, an operation which was continuing as daylight arrived.

At the same time in the early hours of Wednesday a team of arboriculturists was working in the town centre to take down Wellington Town Council’s Christmas tree.

The tree was wood chipped on site and removed shortly after 8.30 am.
