A WELLINGTON resident has shaved her head in support for her long-time friend as she undergoes breast cancer treatment.

To celebrate her 56th birthday, Michelle Tanton-Toth shaved her head in solidarity for friend Helen Costema, 54, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, on Wednesday, January 22.

Helen said: “I tried my hardest to talk her out of it – it’s wonderful, it’s heartwarming really, that someone would do that for me.”

Having met on Hilly Head more than 32 years ago, both pushing prams up the hill, the duo have been friends ever since, says Michelle.

She said: “I just love her. She’s always been there for me through thick and thin. She’s the most selfless person I know.

“I would just like to say that I’m not the brave one here; Helen’s the brave one.”

Having beaten bowel cancer eight years ago, Helen now faces the new challenge of undergoing treatment for breast cancer, after receiving a diagnosis at the end of October.

She has recently completed her ninth round of chemotherapy, with a further seven to go, after which Helen will face surgery and radiation.

She said: “I’m actually doing well with my treatment. There haven’t been too many side effects to deal with.

“The support from my family and friends has been amazing. They’re all so thoughtful, checking on me regularly.”

In shaving her head, Michelle also hopes to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer UK.

So far, the two have succeeded in raising more than £1,300. Helen hopes that awareness can be brought not only to Breast Cancer UK, but to the Beacon Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, for their work providing treatment and support for cancer patients such as herself.
