LONG-TIME Wellington resident Dot Wiley celebrated her 105th birthday this month with friends, family and two cakes.

Treated to chocolates, flowers and a birthday buffet cooked by her daughter and one of her granddaughters, Dot was joined by 19 of her closest friends and family for the occasion.

Dot said: “Well, I feel all right. I sleep a lot during the day, and I get aches and pains like everybody else.”

“The oldest woman in the world is 127,” she added. When asked whether she’d like to achieve the same feat, she said no.

Born on October 14, 1919, Dot moved to Wellington when she was 30 with her late husband George Wiley. She has lived in the same house on Churchfields for the 75 years since.

At age 105, Dot is succeeded by four generations of family, with two children, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Formerly a World War II army cook and later a worker at the aerosol factory on Station Road, Dot appears to be a stickler for routine and continues to perform chores around the house including cleaning and hoovering. When she’s not cleaning, she’s completing several crosswords.

Dot is also an avid collector.

She said: “I collect a lot of rubbish, that’s what my grandchildren say.”

Among her collection is a photo of King Charles with whom, Dot, shares a birthday, she proudly admitted.

“It’s a good day to celebrate”, she said.
