NEW Christmas lights are being prepped for Wellington ahead of an official switch-on event at the end of the month.

The town council has commissioned a new set of lights with a different colour scheme after carrying out a public consultation in the New Year asking for people’s opinions.

Now, based on the feedback, the council has agreed a three-year deal with the Festive Lighting Company, based in West Buckland, for a white and gold colour display in the town centre, with multi-colour lighting in Rockwell Green.

Three council Christmas trees will also be decorated with lights this year, with Rockwell Green having a tree for the first time following last year’s decision to install one in Tonedale to complement the town centre tree.

The lights will be officially switched on during the evening of Saturday, November 25, when an all-day Christmas market will be taking place in High Street.

The council on Tuesday (November 7) also installed a window wrap in the former Fox and Sons estates agents office, in High Street, carrying details of, and a community invitation to attend, the switch-on event.

Councillors earlier this year agreed a £10,500 budget for Christmas 2023 activities which will include a Santa’s grotto and children’s entertainment.

All three town centre public car parks will be free to use for the day of the switch-on with the council covering the £1,000 of lost income.
