Wellington is expected to have its post office back by March of next year and it will be housed in its former home in High Street.

Two brothers Gabriel Purdey, 29, and Frazer, 23, are to reopen the former One Stop Convienience store as a high quality food shop early next month. The plan is to have a post office up and running in the building by March 23rd of next year.

The brothers currently run a farm shop in Horner, near Porlock, but are moving the business to Wellington. Work on converting the High Street premises has already begun. It will have 75 different flavours of ice cream along with high quality beef and lamb.

When the One Stop closed along with its post office in August, 2019, it was only thought to be ‘temporary’ and an ‘interested party’ was said to be putting plans together to re-open it. But never did.

The result has been that Wellington has been without a post office for three years, with the nearest being at Rockwell Green.

Efforts by various businessmen to open a post office in town have never materialised, some saying it was almost imposible to make it pay or there was too much paperwork involved.

The former One Stop Convienience store was bought more than eight months ago by local businessman Mike Tucker who said: “I’m delighted for the town. I wish the brothers every success. “I have been worried for some time about the number of emtpy shops in the town. It is not good. But this new food shop will be a great asset to the town.”

Mr Tucker who lives in Taunton, added: “Wellington is such a lovely, friendly community, the people are great.”
