A TWO-week pop up charity jumble sale by Wellington mayor Cllr Marcus Barr is entering its final 24 hours before ending on Saturday (January 13), with his fund-raising target in sight.
Cllr Barr said on Friday he had nearly reached the £1,000 target and expected to beat it during his final day on Saturday.
He has been using the town council’s Pop Up Shop for the past fortnight to sell items donated by the public, ranging from clothes, books, and DVDs to a duvet set, a range of Pyrex dishes, and a rollator mobility aid.
Cllr Barr told the Wellington Weekly: “The people of Wellington are brilliant, they are so lovely with the way they have come out and supported me.
“I cannot thank the community enough for all the items they have given me, and for all the goods that they have been buying in the last two weeks.
“I said when I started I wanted to raise another £1,000 to match the money I had already raised for my mayor’s charity fund and now I am almost there thanks to everybody’s support, it has been truly fantastic.”
Cllr Barr said he hoped in the longer-term the success of the Pop Up Shop’s jumble sale would lead to the council having its own community shop where goods were donated and sold with the proceeds being used within the town.
He said the Pop Up Shop jumble sale was now offering ‘four items for a £1 donation’ until he closed at 4 pm on Saturday.
The funds will be shared between Rockwell Green Primary School, which needs to replace worn-out children’s play equipment, and Wellington Majorettes, who are travelling to the twin Portugal town of Torres Vedras in February to perform in its annual carnival.
