RESIDENTS of Wellington and Rockwell Green who want to help the town’s mayor Cllr Marcus Barr raise money for good causes are being invited to go along to the Pop Up Shop, in Fore Street, on Friday (December 29).

Cllr Barr will be holding a ‘two-week jumble sale’ in the town council’s Pop Up Shop from December 30 to January 14.

But he needs ‘jumble’ to display and sell during the fortnight and is appealing for people to drop off items at the shop from 9 am on Friday.

Cllr Barr said: “Anything that you think other people will want to buy will be very helpful whether it is unwanted Christmas presents or items that have been lying around for a while I do not mind.

“The idea is to turn them into cash that will go toward helping my chosen good causes of Rockwell Green Primary School and Wellington Majorettes.

“When I became mayor I really wanted to establish a tradition that a ‘Mayor’s Charity Fund’ was set up each year and it is a shame other councillors did not support the idea.

“But I am still determined while I am in office to use my position to do my best to support charitable causes and bring the town together as a community, which we do so brilliantly with events like the street fair and Christmas lights switch-on.

“The Pop Up jumble sale is an easy way for people to help and I hope to raise a significant amount of money from it.”

Cllr Barr said the town’s majorettes were due to represent Wellington in the annual carnival in the twin Portugal town of Torres Vedras in February and needed help to cover the costs of the trip.

Rockwell Green School also needed support to fund new play equipment for children which would replace some of the items which were wearing out.

He said he was looking for any items for the Pop Up jumble sale such as bric-a-brac, records, CDs, Blu Rays, which would also serve the double purpose of helping local people to ‘find a bargain’ for the New Year.

Cllr Barr said eventually he would like to see ‘community charity shop’ for Wellington where the money raised was kept for good causes in the town.
