WELLINGTON’s controversial street market is set to return for a ‘last hurrah’ on Saturday, March 30.

The market had come under fire from some town centre traders, who blamed the event for a drop in footfall and takings at their High Street premises.

In a meeting of Wellington Town Councillors, where the issue was discussed, one councillor speculated that the operator’s imminent move to Australia would result in this weekend’s market being cancelled.

However the Wellington Weekly News has now learned the market will go ahead, in what appears to be the final street market run by Vic Sadye before he moves down under. Confirming the news he said:

“The market of the 30th March will still be going ahead as there has been so much support from local traders and stallholders.

“My move to Australia does not affect the market on that date.”

However the street market does look set to return at a later date in a different form, after undergoing a planned “total revamp.”

Street market operators have reportedly boasted that their latest event will see the erection of almost 30 stalls in the town centre.

Promoting the event, a spokesperson for the market to social media to invite residents to visit the wares on offer. They said:

Come to the High Street for a great family day out. We know March 30 is going to be a fantastic event for the whole family, the High Street and the whole town.”
