Lloyds bank on Fore Street in Wellington is set to close, bringing over a century of banking in the building to an end.

The Fore Street bank is Wellington's only remaining bank, and is scheduled to close on September 13 later this year.

In a statement confirming the closure, a spokesperson for Lloyds bank said: "Visits to our Wellington, Somerset branch have fallen over recent years, as many customers now choose to bank digitally.

When the branch closes, customers can use the local Post Office for everyday banking which is less than a mile away, access cash at the nearby free-to-use ATMs, alongside other ways to bank such as over the phone and online, or the new Banking Hub once it is up and running.“

Following news of the closure, the LINK cash machine service announced a new banking hub for the town.

The hub will be a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers with any bank can deposit and withdraw cash, pay bills and carry out other transactions.

The hub will be delivered by Cash Access UK which is set to investigate potential sites for its new hub over the coming weeks.

Chris Ashton, Head of Banking Services, at LINK, said: "We know the way we pay for things and bank is changing. Yet not everyone is able to bank online or use digital payments.

"Many consumers and small businesses still rely on face-to-face banking and cash. That’s why we’re pleased to confirm Wellington has been selected for a banking hub.”

Lloyds have confirmed if the banking hub is not established before the date of its planned closure, it will keep its doors open for a further twelve months.

In a statement Lloyds said: "If the Banking Hub is not up and running by the listed closure date of September 13 2023, we’ll keep the branch open for up to 12 months starting from March 29 to allow for a smooth transition of banking services in the community."
