STAFF in Wellington’s Wetherspoon’s public house the Iron Duke were this week ‘cycling to Berlin’ to raise funds for a cancer charity.
They are aiming to complete the equivalent of the 721 miles from Wimbledon, London, and the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany, by Sunday (July 14).
It will coincide with the finals of the famous Wimbledon tennis tournament and football’s European Championships, in which England will be playing.
Pub staff have been cycling relays on a static cycling machine in the bar since Monday as customers have followed the tennis and football on large television screens.
Shift leader Kirsty Allen said money raised from the sponsored effort would go to Young Lives vs Cancer, ‘a charity we work very closely with’.
Iron Duke staff hold a number of fund-raisers for the charity each year, the most recent being an Easter bake sale of homemade cakes which brought in nearly £500.
