RESIDENTS of Wellington were shocked this week to learn that one of the town’s most influential figures was seriously ill in Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.

Wellington’s Mayor, Cllr Marcus Barr said: “I know the whole of the community will be saddened by this news and will be holding Richard deep in their thoughts over Christmas.

“Richard is part of the heart and soul of the Wellington community and has done so much good work over decades, much of which I doubt people will ever know about.”

Richard has devoted years of volunteering service to the town and surrounding area and became the town’s first honorary freeman in 2010.

He has been involved in countless town-related events and societies, including Wellington Flower Show, Wellington Community Centre, and the local museum society.

In a family statement, his cousin Ben Fox, said: “Richard collapsed at home on December 7 and is currently at Musgrove.

“He is being very well looked after and is content and peaceful.

“Arrangements are being made for Richard to move permanently to a nursing home, preferably in Wellington. The family would appreciate privacy at this time and will provide updates when appropriate.”
