AN emergency ban on ‘no-fault’ evictions over the Christmas period has been called for by Taunton and Wellington Liberal Democrats.
Government data from 2022-23 showed 35 households were placed at risk of homelessness in the Somerset West and Taunton district as a result of Section 21 notices - used by landlords for ‘no-fault’ evictions.
It equates to 21 per cent of all those threatened with homelessness over the festive period.
Now, Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate Gideon Amos ha called on the Government to enact an emergency ban on any Section 21 evictions over Christmas and the New Year to prevent families being made homeless through no fault of their own.
Mr Amos said: “These are families facing a nightmare before Christmas.
“With the cost of living crisis putting intolerable pressure on family finances, a shocking number of households could find themselves on the streets over the festive period through no fault of their own.
“Instead of taking urgent steps to prevent homelessness before it happens, this Government is kicking the ban on no-fault evictions into the long grass and has even introduced measures to criminalise rough sleeping.
“We need to see an emergency ban on no fault evictions over the festive season and a compassionate approach to rough sleeping to make sure no Taunton and Wellington family is left out in the cold this Christmas.”
