COUNCILLORS in Wellington want to help put some extra bounce into the Whirlwinds Academy trampoline club with a grant of nearly £3,400.
Members of Wellington Town Council’s finance committee have agreed to recommend the full council to award the club a grant for £3,362.22 to go toward an accessibility and disability project.
Cllr Mike McGuffie said: “The club is actually based outside of our boundary, but they say that 70 per cent of their members are from Wellington.”
Former mayor Cllr Andrew Govier said: “They are a very successful organisation and really have put Wellington on the map with people competing at national level.”
He said the club wanted to make trampolining accessible for everybody and the overall cost of its improvement project was £4,200.
Cllr Govier said: “I am passionate about getting everybody involved in sport, and I am very much in favour of this."
Wellington Mayor Cllr Marcus Barr said: “They do really fantastic work at the Whirlwinds Academy.”
Councillors on the committee agreed to support the grant application, but recognised a final decision would have to be made by the full council.
The finance committee can only go ahead with grants up to £3,000 and any application for larger sums has to go to a monthly full council meeting for approval.
Whirlwinds Academy moved into its purpose-built trampoline centre on Chelston Business Park in January, 2018, and three years later added the discipline of gymnastics and rearranged its premises.
It now incorporates a tumble track, bars, and beams, and attracts experienced gymnastics coaches.
The academy operates sessions for all ages of gymnast from six years through to senior international level adults.
