AN invasion of wasps has forced the cancellation of the official opening of a children’s play area in Holcombe Rogus at the weekend.

The Mary Fewings Play Park was due to have been unveiled on Saturday by her great-granddaughter Daisy Towells, aged six.

But the discovery of a large wasp nest in the middle of the play area meant it was not safe to do so, nor for families who had been invited to attend and bring their own picnics.

An expert was later called in to remove the nest, which was in the ground, and the play equipment is now safe to use again.

A new opening date is being worked on and is likely to be some time during September.

Mary Fewings, who died in 2020, bequeathed a field on her farm to the village as a children’s play park and the local community raised £72,000 to put in modern play equipment.
