HUNDREDS of youngsters took to the streets of Wellington and Rockwell Green after dark for ‘trick or treat’ on Halloween (October 31).

The monsters and ghouls came in all sorts of sizes and shapes, as did the spooky decorations with which homeowners adorned their houses from one end of town to the other.

Popes Lane, Rockwell Green, drew large numbers of trick or treaters this year.

Judy Burke again welcomed visitors to her ‘House of Horrors’ near the Wellesley Cinema, in Mantle Street, which saw even more scares this year.

Each year, Mrs Burke covers her home from rooftop to cellar in animated characters which come to life when trick or treaters venture too close.

Visitors are also offered a scary tour of the creepy inside of the property, and all the donations Mrs Burke receives are later given to help Wellington Museum.

The Halloween weather stayed dry and warm this year, which meant Mrs Burke’s witch’s make-up did not run and make her even scarier than usual.

Another spookily decorated home which drew a constant stream of trick or treaters was in Popes Lane, Rockwell Green, where Katie Batten went through half of her stock of 70 bags of treats in just the first hour of darkness.

Ms Batten said: “Halloween is my thing, definitely, more than Christmas.

“It takes a few days to set up, but it has to be done.

“We store the stuff in the garage and bring the things out every year and add a bit to it each time, so it is also a way of recycling things like wooden pallets.”
