The regular Friday night meeting included being shown how to skin and clean a rabbit and pluck and gut a pheasant, as well as discussing details such as dealing with hyperthermia and hypothermia.
After spending the night at their meeting room the boys and girls tucked into a breakfast of porridge after being woken by a leader banging saucepans together.
A kit inspection and pat down ensured no hidden contraband – each Scout was only allowed to take six items which had to include their sleeping bag and a sharing item – before starting the walk along mainly footpaths via Wellington Monument to the overnight camp site in a wood. Following the previous very wet evening, finding a place to sleep was the first priority. A tarpaulin was tied between two trees and the Scouts started to build fires and prepare their evening meal of pheasant using the knowledge they had learnt the day before. Lunch consisted of one slice of bread.
Before leaving the hall each Scout was given one potato and one carrot and these were cooked in a communal pot with the birds roasting over the fires.
Although a couple of Scouts used hammocks, most slept under the tarpaulin. Daybreak saw them packing up and taking a shorter walk back to Hemyock where they were collected to return home to a hearty breakfast.
