RESIDENTS are calling for action on a road described as “manic” after three parked cars were struck by a van.
The collision involved resident’s parked vehicles on Hilly Head Road, in Rockwell Green, at around 6am on Tuesday morning (September 24).
Martine Jaquemet, who is among the residents whose vehicles were damaged, heard the sound of the impact from inside her home.
But she says the van driver involved in the crash, who she spoke to, left a note with his contact details on the damaged vehicles . She claims overgrown hedgerows narrowing the road are to blame.
Two of the cars struck have been seriously damaged with a third only receiving minor damage. The van involved was also damaged and is understood to have been towed from the scene shortly after the accident.
Martine said she did not contact police and was resolving the issue with her insurers.
She said: “It’s to do with this road really, which is used and abused. The problem here is the (damaged) wall.”
Ms Jaquemet also indicated that due to an overgrown greenery, the width of the road has narrowed causing it to become increasingly dangerous.
She said: “I came out to measure it (overgrown greenery) yesterday and it is 1.4m worth of road that we’ve lost. And people still use the road because they think it’s a shortcut.
“The road gets really manic because that’s the only post office we have. One neighbour has signed a petition to make it one way or for residents only.
“My house flooded earlier in the year. It’s one thing after another, really.”
Martine said she contacted Dave Farrow, clerk to Wellington Town Council, regarding the wall and greenery.
Dave said: “Darren Hill is our open spaces manager and I’ve asked him to have a look at the overgrown greenery to see if it is something we can deal with if Somerset Council doesn’t respond or it responds but won’t do anything.
“As this is a highways issue it is for Somerset Council to deal with and if needs be we will push for them to do the work. If they don’t, then as a last resort we will see if we can step in depending on what needs to be done.”
