CHILDREN from Rockwell Green Primary School have laid Remembrance Crosses on the war graves at Wellington Cemetery.

The children, led by headteacher Mike Berrisford, also carefully laid posies of flowers on the graves.

Wellington’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Mark Lithgow accompanied by members of the Wellington branch of the Royal British Legion, helped the children at some of the graves.

Wellington branch standard bearer and chairman Bob Trickey headed the procession to and from school.

Children from the school visit the graves every month apart from August but in October lay a wooden cross of remembrance as well as posies of flowers.

British Legion branch secretary Peter Critchard said: “On reaching the cemetery the children’s chattering stops. Then in their pairs each war grave is gently tended, fresh flowers and a remembrance cross is laid and the old flowers removed.

“After every war grave had been visited the children paid their respects by taking part in a minute’s silence, during which the RBL Standard was dipped and raised.

“Once again, the Wellington branch of the RBL would like to say how proud everyone is with all that the children do in order to remember those who have given their lives in the service of their country.

“We take this opportunity to once again thank Wellington Town Council for providing the flowers, Mr Berrisford, Mrs Williams and her classroom assistants for their understanding and patience in allowing the children to do this every month.”
