PUBLIC toilets in Wellington town centre look set to be closed for some months after a car crash which left the building unstable.
Emergency services attended when a BMW car came off the road and crashed headfirst into the toilet block in Longforth Road on Friday afternoon.
The force of the impact partially demolished the building, bringing down masonry and a beam and leaving gaping cracks along its frontage.
Nobody was injured in the collision and neither of the two toilet cubicles which were open at the time were in use.
The building was shored up by emergency workers and Somerset West and Taunton Council teams and left enclosed in Heras-style temporary fencing after the car was winched out and removed.
The toilets are owned by Wellington Town Council, which is calling in a structural engineer to advise on its condition and if repairs can be carried out.

The town council had previously been discussing plans to demolish the toilets and rebuild them using money received from housing developers.
Last month, the council agreed to seek tenders from specialist contractors to look at options for, and oversee, a redesign and construction of the toilet block.
The council was looking at a budget of £145,000 for the project.
