Common sense on housing plans
Editor,
I am so grateful the Council has seen sense and turned down the preposterous plans for Popham Court.
Surely the best use for the property would be as a short-stay convalescent home, where people could go for two or three weeks until they were ready to go home.
It would not need full nursing staff, and would assist in reducing bed blocking which as our MP has pointed out is a major problem at this time.

Editor’s note: Whilst Wellington Town Council’s planning committee is recommending refusal of the planning application, the final decision will rest with the new Somerset Council, which comes into existence on April 1.
Why shouldn’t homes be extended?
Editor,
I am reading your piece on Cllr Powell-Brace’s worries about extended houses in Wellesley Park area, WWN, March 10.
Firstly: if the extensions are within limits and comply to regulations, then why shouldn’t homeowners improve and extend?
Secondly: lovely, large affluent homes bring affluent families to the town, creating better business opportunities for the high street and other local businesses.
Thirdly: the precedent has been set, so frankly, you can’t object to an extension on the basis that too many are being allowed and you just don’t like it.
Bigger picture thinking is needed here and a “live and let live” attitude.
I see no issue with people creating a property, from one that already is built, that fits their lifestyle. It just seems like there are more pressing things to think about, rather than getting upset that people are spending their money with local businesses to improve their homes.
