SOMERSET Council says it still has no fixed date to repair a sinkhole which first appeared on a Wellington road in early June.

After a seven month wait, the council is yet to give residents of Parklands Road confirmation that a “1.5x1.5 carriageway void” will be repaired.

The crater, which emerged after Parkland Road’s surface gave way and collapsed, was condoned off with cones and barriers by Somerset Council on Monday, June 3, for repairs that week.

Wessex Water has also said it has visited the scene to put safety barriers and cones in place and confirmed there were no issues with the water or sewerage pipes.

A resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, who is inconvenienced by the crater near their home have become “annoyed and frustrated” by the ssue.

They said: “I’ve complained four times. I hear nothing and nothing gets done. I just see it as a feature now.”

Another resident, Mike Green, said: “It doesn’t bother me too much but it could potentially collapse more than it has if it’s not repaired.”

In October, Somerset Council announced new plans to reinstate the carriageway void to surface level for the week commencing Monday, October 28 - work which was not undertaken and signage reporting the repairs has since been removed.

A spokesperson for Somerset Council said: “Our team has been putting together a works proposal to repair the damage but due to the complexity of the issue there has been some delay.

“We are looking to progress this as soon as possible. In the meantime we are sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Until last month, a digger was left unused on the site. This has now been removed and the sinkhole remains cordoned off, adorned with decorations added by local residents for the Christmas period.
