NEW MP Rachel Gilmour, who represents West Somerset and parishes around Wellington, has aligned herself with other Parliamentarians to call for a new ‘wealth tax’ to be part of next week’s Budget.
Mrs Gilmour, who was the only Liberal Democrat to support the group, joined Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell, and Diane Abbott in writing to Chancellor Rachel Reeves to demand an extra two per cent tax on assets worth more than £10 million.
The Chancellor, who has already cut winter fuel payments for many pensioners, will deliver her Budget on Wednesday (October 30).
Mrs Gilmour was asked for an explanation for her support for the group but had not commented at the time of going to press.
Meanwhile, Wellington Lib Dem MP Gideon Amos, who was not a signatory, said he was focused on ensuring local health services and the town’s railway station project received the funding they needed.
