Mounted police were seen patrolling in Wellington on Wednesday

Mounted police returned to Wellington on Wednesday, where they were seen patrolling the High Street.

The mounted officers were seen riding down the High Street, toward Fore Street, in the early afternoon.

Mounted police are deployed for a variety of reasons, from responding to high profile incidents of crime, to supporting community engagement activities and providing public reassurance.

The mounted police are seen in the town several times a year, particularly around the time of large events.

The officers were not thought to be responding to a specific incident.

Avon and Somerset's mounted police have been out across the county on routine patrols and engaging with communities in recent weeks.

Somerset horses were recently deployed to Wales, where they helped police a football match between Swansea and Cardiff.

Last month officers on horseback gave chase after spotting a driver in Taunton town centre using his phone from behind the wheel of his car.

In a statement issued after the March pursuit, Avon and Somerset Police said: "Officers from the Avon and Somerset Constabulary mounted section have been supporting Operation Telecom, our operation to clamp down on the risk posed by drivers who use their phone at the wheel.

This driver was sighted and stopped on East Reach, Taunton. Drivers face six points & £200 fine if caught using a phone."
