TWO new thermal imaging cameras are now available to borrow from Wellington Library to help residents cut costs on energy bills.

The new cameras can be used to identify where heat is being lost in homes in order to improve efficiency.

The devices have been bought by the town council and were presented by the Mayor of Wellington, Councillor Janet Lloyd, to the library’s supervisor, James Denslow, at the official opening on Wednesday, October 2.

The two cameras will be available for Wellington residents to check where efficiency can be improved.

Wellington Town Council climate project officer Stephen Tate said: “We have just doubled the total number of thermal imaging cameras that can be hired.”

Using the cameras allows users to identify areas of a home where energy is being lost, which may result from inadequate insulation and air leaks.

By detecting and correcting efficiency issues a homeowner can save up to an average of 17 per cent on energy bills, according to Ignite Property Group.

Homes also account for 22 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions.

Stephen said: “With energy bills on the rise again, using a thermal camera to locate where your home is losing heat is good for the planet and your wallet.

“The thing is, only library users who live in Wellington can borrow the two cameras the town council bought, which still leaves only two cameras for the rest of the county.

“Our hope is other towns follow suit and buy thermal imagers to loan out to their communities because the library service is happy to be the point of contact.”

Cameras can be borrowed for three days by adult members of Somerset Libraries who live within the Wellington Parish and can be secured by visiting Wellington Library or by emailing [email protected].

The cameras will only be available to borrow from the library from March to October because they need a temperature differential of 10 degrees Centigrade or more between the inside and outside of a building to accurately detect heat loss.
