A MISSPELLED sign in Wellington’s town centre has been replaced - but it has another misspelling.

The Cubitt’s Place sign near the High Street was torn down earlier this year before Somerset Council stepped in to mount a new one, and got the spelling wrong.

The replacement sign read: “Cubbitts Place”, which included an extra ‘B’ and failed to include an apostrophe.

The mishap resulted in two different spellings of the sign at either end of the lane between the Nook and Cranny and Chandni Chowk.

When the Wellington Weekly News brought the mistake to the attention of the local authority, they pledged to correct it “as soon as possible.”

More than three months later, Somerset Council has installed a replacement sign, and have gotten it wrong again.

The new Cubitt’s Place sign is again missing an apostrophe, and may now be replaced for a third time.

The alleyway takes its name from the old Cubitt & Drake yard - which is now the location of a row of townhouses, with the associated walkthrough named in memory of the historic site.

Somerset Council said the new sign cost £22, and would not commit to replacing it again, saying the situation would be reviewed at a future date.

Residents also complained to the Wellington Weekly News about the quality of the sign - which is fixed with different sizes and colours of screws, with some protruding from the sign and others sunken. The replacement sign, which appears to be plastic, also looks to be bowed.
