RENOWNED local sportsman Nigel Jennings has died at the age of 72 after a battle with pneumonia.
Mr Jennings is succeeded by his wife Janice, sons Daniel and Dean, and four grandchildren.
Born on March 30, 1952, MrJennings spent his early life in Rockwell Green. He later moved to Wellington after marrying his wife, Janice, where he remained for more than 45 years.
Many local residents knew Nigel for his passion for both football and skittles, playing for teams in Rockwell green and his hometown.
Alongside his love for sport, Mr Jennings was a reliable and dedicated employee of Relyon - the Somerset-founded mattress manufacturer - for more than half of his life. He was also a keen fisherman and gardener in his spare time.
His children remember him as a true family man with a deep love for his four grandchildren.
His son Daniel described his father, and said: “He was selfless. He would give absolutely everything to help us out – if we needed help, he would be there. That’s pretty much what he lived for.
“For a man that hasn’t been well for more than ten years, he has always gone above and beyond to put everyone’s needs above his.”
A funeral for Mr Jennings will take place at Taunton Crematorium on Tuesday, February 4, at 2pm, followed by a wake at Wellington Football Club at 3.30pm.
Daniel said: “We welcome anyone who would like to come along – he would definitely appreciate everyone coming to say goodbye.”
Marc Bright, secretary of Wellington Ex-Services Skittles League, said: "The league is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Nigel Jennings, a former player who represented Reservists for many years.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Nigel’s family, friends, and former teammates during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.”
