Firefighters called out to rescue stranded motorists as roads were badly hit by flooding across Somerset.

Several roads were closed on Saturday morning as heavy rain continued to batter the region.

The A39 at Washford in West Somerset was shut after a car left the road and ended up in a ditch on a stretch of road affected by flooding.

A police spokesperson said: "A man attempting to drive his car through floodwater on the A39 at Williton got into difficulty earlier & his vehicle is now in a ditch."

Firefighters from Wellington rescued the driver of a van stuck in water on the A38 and a motorist stranded in a car at Nynehead, near Wellington.

On Exmoor, the road into Dulverton at Jury Hill was closed again due to flooding at Hele Bridge.

Travel Somerset said the worst affected roads were: The A361 Burrowbridge to East Lyng; A358 Donyatt; Crock St, Donyatt; A38 Wellington nr Willowbrook Garden Centre; B3222 Dulverton; Oake Rd, Bradford on Tone; Broadway St, Broadway; B3227 Norton Fitzwarren.

A series of flood warnings and alerts were issued after heavy rain overnight which continued into the morning.

A Yellow Warning for heavy rain issued by the Met Office for a wide area of the Westcountry overnight was in force until 12noon.

The heavy rain in recent days has caused road closures due to flooding in the rural area around Wellington and Wiveliscombe, as well as in parts of Exmoor, with Dulverton particularly badly affected.
