Motorists are being advised to avoid low-lying roads near the River Tone as heavy rains causes flooding.

There have been reports of the road between Wellington and Nynehead being under several feet of water on Saturday.

Pictures on social media showed water lying in fields near Nynehead and a tractor driving through with water up to the front wheels.

The road was reported to be clear on Sunday morning, but the Environment Agency is warning that more rain could see low-lying roads under water.

Other low-lying roads which see flooding due to high river levels are also at risk during the current spell of heavy rain.

The flood alert for the River Tone catchment, which includes the area around Wellington says: "We expect river levels to remain high throughout the weekend and into Monday on 09/01/23. We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Our incident response staff are clearing weed screens. Please plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers which may be flooded and refer to local authority website for local road closures and stay aware in case further warnings are issued."
