Wellington residents will have to wait until at least July to find out whether a new Lidl will be built in their town.

The German supermarket giant has put forward plans to build a new store at the corner of Nynehead Road and the B3187 Taunton Road, not far from the Longforth Farm housing development.

Somerset West and Taunton Council’s planning committee had been set to make a decision on the proposals.

But a decision on the plans has now been pushed back for at least two months – the WWN reported last week that the scheme had been pulled from the committee’s agenda on ‘legal advice’.

Wellington is currently served by an Asda, a Co-op and a Waitrose, with a One Stop in the Tonedale area and a Budgens within the Shell petrol station near Junction 26.

Cllr Simon Coles confirmed the deferral after he was narrowly re-elected at chairman of the planning committee.

He said: “I know most of us have had in excess of 70 emails of support and around half a dozen or so in opposition – but we will declare that at the appropriate time.

“It’s been deferred. I’m not sure when it’s going to come back but I can’t see it being before the July meeting.”
