COUNCILLORS have said that street drinkers should be left alone by police in Wellington unless they are causing problems for other people.

Sgt Jon O’Connor made reference at Wellington Town Council’s full monthly meeting on October 7 that the matter about street drinking had cropped up in recent conversations.

He admitted that there were a couple of areas where some adults meet up and drink in public.

But councillors felt that they were not causing problems of an anti-social behaviour nature.

Cllr Andrew Govier said: “These people are in their own little world and don’t really take any notice of anybody walking by.

“They aren’t running around the town smashing bottles or causing problems.”

Cllr Govier added: “It’s not necessarily a good look for the town, but they aren’t really causing problems.”

Sgt O’Connor, meanwhile, was pleased to tell councillors that Wellington Carnival on September 28 had passed off peacefully.
