A WAR veteran who was at Dunkirk and the D-Day landings has finally received his medals - thanks to his next door neighbour.

James May, 93, who lives in Dunkeswell, missed the boat at Dunkirk and had to fend for himself as he and six others headed south in stolen car with the Germans at their heels.

Four years later he was part of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France.

Neighbour Jim Greenshields told the WWN: "I was chatting to him one day and asked him where his medals were. He said he'd never had any."
