A DIABETIC Wellington woman died from an insulin overdose, an inquest has concluded.
April Hooper, 31, was found ‘unresponsive’ at her home in Aspin Road by her sister Samantha on September 25 last year.
Somerset assistant coroner Vanessa McKinlay heard paramedics called to the house recorded a dangerously low level of blood sugar and rushed Ms Hooper to Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton.
A scan showed Ms Hooper was suffering widespread lung consolidation caused by aspiration and a hypoxic brain injury.
Despite receiving intensive treatment, Ms Hooper died on October 7.
Ms McKinlay said: “April had a history of insulin-dependent type one diabetes and alcohol dependence.
“Post mortem evidence confirmed the injuries were likely precipitated by excess insulin.
“Police investigations have concluded there was no third party involvement.
“The evidence does not support this being an act with death as the intended result.”
Ms McKinlay, sitting in the Old Municipal Buildings, Taunton, concluded the medical cause of Ms Hooper’s death was ‘aspiration pneumonia with lung collapse hypoglycaemic and hypoxic brain injury, excess of insulin in an individual with type one diabetes’.
She said the injuries were precipitated by a self-administered overdose of insulin but the evidence did not make clear Ms Hooper’s intentions at the time she took the overdose.
