Court Fields STEM enrichment activities

Court Fields students have enjoyed a trip to Hinkley Point C as part of a series of activities designed to offer enrichment in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Court Field's science department arranged for 40 students from year 9 to visit the nuclear reactor construction site. Students were given a presentation on the importance of transitioning toward renewable electricity generation, and shown how information taught in GCSE science has direct applications in the world.

Students were also told about EDF apprenticeship schemes on offer at Hinkley Point, and toured the interactive visitors centre where they experimented with Geiger counters before visiting the construction site to see the reactors being built.

Year 9 students have also been offered the opportunity to be mentored by Leonardo Helicopter employees as part of the Flying Start Challenge. Three teams of Court Fields students travelled to Yeovilton airbase to take part in the challenge's regional finals.

Students presented posters displaying their proposals for gliders to a panel of aeronautical experts and were able to explore a Merlin and Wildcat helicopter in the base's hangars. Students also flew their gliders against other teams, with two students reaching the national finals set to take place in May.

During Science Week, which ran between March 10 and March 19, 60 students from year 8 participated in a STEM workshop, where teams of three worked to build rubber band cars. Students created self-propelled vehicles, and will be able to race them against one another in coming lessons.

Key Stage 3 students were invited to submit a poster for British Science Week on the theme of 'connection', with the best entries set to be sent into the national poster competition.

Later this term there will be technology tournament which will see three teams of students from years 9 and 10 to compete against other local schools at Bishop Foxes school. Students will develop and construct a machine that meets a brief set by Taunton Vale Rotary Club.
