BRITAIN in Bloom judges were due in Wellington on Tuesday (July 16) to assess the quality of the town’s planters, parks, and its general cleanliness.

They will mark the town for the annual South West in Bloom competition, in which last year Wellington took a silver gilt in the Portman Cup.

Judges will again see a Green Flag flying in Wellington Park, an international accreditation which has been renewed for 2024-25.

The park has now won a Green Flag for more than 15 years running and is also a Green Flag Heritage Site in recognition of its standard of management being in line with its local and national historical importance.

This year’s application for the award was funded by Wellington Town Council, which takes over management of the park from next April.

Town council open spaces manager Darren Hill said: “Wellington Town Council would like to extend its thanks to the Friends of Wellington Park, the Community Payback Team, and the hard work of Somerset Council’s grounds maintenance team for keeping up the good work and making Wellington Park a place we can all be proud of.”

Mayor of Wellington, Cllr Janet Lloyd, said: “I will be accompanying the judges as they tour the town assessing our wonderful floral displays.

“The tour will include visiting our lovely park and it is absolutely amazing that it has been awarded the Green Flag again this year.

“My thanks and appreciation go to all those who have worked so hard to make the park so beautiful.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag award scheme manager, Paul Todd said: “Wellington Park is a vital green space for communities in Wellington to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely, and it provides important opportunities for park users to improve their physical and mental health.

“We know that staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag award.

“It is important that our free to use spaces are maintained to the standard, making them accessible for all members of the community while ensuring the environment is protected.”
