TAUNTON and Wellington’s MP, Gideon Amos, has launched a campaign to support elderly people in danger of losing their Winter Fuel Payments.

The Labour government has announced that, in future, only people receiving Pension Credit will receive the payment.

Previously, all pensioners over the age of 65 received the annual £200 payment while those over 80 were given £300.

Mr Amos wants to ensure as many people as possible get registered for Pension Credit in time for the coldest weather, so they continue to receive their fuel payment.

"We all understand that the wealthiest can manage without this payment,” he said. “My own mum used to give hers to charity.

“But some of the country’s poorest and most vulnerable older people are being caught up in this and will lose vital funds to help them keep the heating on in the next few months.

“The government’s own estimates show that 880,000 pensioners who are poor enough to get Pension Credit aren’t registered.

“In areas like Taunton and Wellington, which have higher than average older populations, there could be around 2,000 people here who will lose help they desperately need.

“To claim, just phone this number 0800 99 1234 and staff at the Department of Work and Pensions will make your application for you.

“It’s really important to note that - even if you’re only awarded 50p of Pension Credit - that will passport you to up to 100 per cent off your Council Tax bill as well as to the Winter Fuel Payment.

“Don’t forget to do it before December 21 and claim for the maximum three months backdated.”

Mr Amos added: “As Parliament now returns, I and my LibDem colleagues will be telling Labour to do what they should have done in the first place - ensure the poorest pensioners are registered for help before taking the payment away.”

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, announced the changes to Winter Fuel Payment eligibility in July, to begin from this Winter 2024/25.
