SOURCES of free food for the vulnerable are working hard to tackle the “alienation” of local residents this Christmas through festive provisions and events.

Manager of the Wellington Food Bank, Christine Silverlight, said the danger such schemes face in December is due to “extra pressure” on residents with changes in weather, expensive food bills and changes to winter fuel payments.

She said: “We’ve not been as busy this year, but it’s important we try our best to make people aware of our services.

“At Christmas, that's so important for people who are struggling, so they don't miss out. You don't want people to feel alienated because they know they haven't got any money.”

Volunteers at Willand Pantry are putting together tailored Christmas hampers with all the trimmings. Having sent out 44 Christmas meals last December, the pantry will be sending out 62 to individuals, families and the elderly.

Pantry volunteer Lin Hillier said this anonymous service catered for people who may be too proud to come in at any other time. In this case, the “gift” hamper allows people to enjoy the significant meal fuss-free.

Volunteer Felicity Whitehead added: “A lot of people, they're embarrassed. They're elderly people who have never had to (ask for food) in their life. And they shouldn't have to.

“So at least with this, they don't have to come and prove with a slip of paper that they're entitled to food. There are no questions asked.”

Founder of the Willand Pantry, Helen Jones, said the Christmas service has been essential in providing a morale boost over the festive period.

She said: “It means that these people have something decent on Christmas day. Everybody deserves a proper Christmas dinner.”

John Salter is one of the Wellington residents working to engage isolated locals this Christmas with the annual Wellington Christmas Day Lunch, providing a meal for those celebrating alone.

John said: “I think it’s important because people are on their own, they are lonely, particularly at Christmas, and we want to help them through it.”

Wellington Foodbank will be open on December 23 and 30. To sign up to the Christmas Day Lunch, email [email protected].
